Issues and Action

Lobby Day 2012

January 18
Come Join Us!

The League of Women Voters of NYS will hold its annual Lobby Day on January 18, 2012. All members are invited to join us in Albany to learn about the League's positions, tour the capitol, watch the Assembly or Senate in action, and possibly meet some key legislative staffers.

The day will start at 11:00 am with a workshop on how we develop our positions, what are our positions, what are the key issues this year, and how members can participate in the legislative process. After a short lunch, attendees will be given a tour of the Capitol and may stay to watch the legislative sessions (they are scheduled to be in session on this day, but no guarantees) and meet key staffers. The workshop, tours and introductions will be led by LWVNYS Vice President for Issues and Advocacy, Sally Robinson, and LWVNYS Legislative Director, Barbara Bartoletti.

The day is designed for any League members interested in becoming more active in our advocacy agenda or just interested in learning about our advocacy work. We cannot provide reimbursement for travel expenses, but we can arrange overnight stays at League members' homes, if people are interested. We will also arrange hotel accomodations, at your own expense, in Albany if you prefer that.

Come join the fun and see how you can make your voice heard in Albany!

If you want to register for Lobby Day 2012, please email Katrina at the state League office by Jan 6 - and let her know if you need overnight accomodations.

2011 Legislative Agenda

FIX ALBANY NOW!
Steps To a New and Better State Government Redistricting
Create an independent redistricting commission to draft the New York State legislative and Congressional political boundaries for the 2012 elections.

Campaign Finance Reform
Support lower contribution limits and increased disclosure. In particular, support stronger and effective campaign finance enforcement with increased civil and criminal penalties for violations.

Ethics Reform
Put in place a new independent ethics oversight agency and tougher enforcement. Make the legislature more open and accountable through continued rules reform.

Election Reform
Improve election processes to extend, encourage and protect voting, including Election Day registration, better ballot design, improved polling place management/poll worker training, and measures to ensure the integrity of all ballots.

Other League Positions

Inform Yourself — Health Care Reform

The League believes that quality, affordable health care should be available to all U.S. residents. Other U.S. health care policy goals should include the equitable distribution of services, efficient and economical delivery of care, advancement of medical research and technology, and a reasonable total national expenditure level for health care. Furthermore, the League believes that all Americans should have access to a basic level of care that includes the prevention of disease, health promotion and education, primary care (including prenatal and reproductive health), acute care, long-term care and mental health care.
Through decades of work in their communities, League members have learned that Americans believe that fairness and responsibility, as well as access, are important values for any health care system. We believe that healthcare reform can only succeed if it takes all these values into account.
